Fast Internet - Everywhere

wifi travel networking

I'm currently sitting at the dining room table of a cabin. The cabin is in a camp site. The camp site is a Big4 in the Gold Coast.

It's not exactly the sticks, but it's not exactly a high density urban environment either.

We're in the Gold Coast because my daughter has a sporting competition that has brought us here, I prepared a laptop expecting to get some odds and ends completed in the evening but didn't really plan for Internet. I assumed that in a pinch I'd just tether to my phone and not worry about it.

Imagine my surprise when I fired up my phone, connected to the free WiFi and speeds were FAST. Even more surprising when I ran speed test and saw that I was getting > 120mb in both directions.

My next surprise was loading up Wifi Man and seeing that this is a Ubiquiti network - a GPON network to be specific.

A GPON network is a FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) network, it could be deployed by a local ISP or in this case as part of a campus setup. Even in a cabin I wasn't expecting a fast fiber connection. The upload speeds were a real shock - compared to my home Internet's WAY TOO ASYNCHRONOUS 1000/50mb connection this is a breath of fresh air.

As an aside - fuck you NBNco for pairing 1000mb down with 50mb up.

Tucked behind the TV is a UISP UF-WIFI6 - as the name implies, it's a fiber Wifi 6 GPON router. Details here.

The speeds fluctuate based on the total demand the campground is experiencing, but the latency, the jitter and the speeds overall speak to a high quality internet link. I really can't complain.

I'm continuously impressed by the way technology is being adopted, and higher quality and speed is becoming the norm.
